Common San Diego Plumbing Myths

There’s plenty of information about plumbing out there, but some pervasive myths still persist surrounding the best ways to care for your plumbing. We’re here to dispel some of the most common myths and help you take care of your San Diego plumbing properly.

1. Citrus fruits are the best way to clean your disposal. While it is true that grinding up a lemon inside your garbage disposal can clean the blades and inner reservoir, the citrus acid can corrode some plumbing components. If you are following some other advice and running plenty of water through the disposal, this shouldn’t be a problem. Another option is to run some ice cubes through your disposal to clean it and sharpen the blades at the same time.

2. Drain cleaners are the most effective way of removing clogs. Drain cleaners are good at dissolving clogs in your pipes. And the pipes themselves. If you have a minor clog, it’s much better to pursue it with vinegar and baking soda. Or you could call a San Diego plumbing professional who can use a snake or other methods to remove a clog.

3. Your disposal can handle anything that will fit in it. A disposal may be able to grind and tear many items, but there are still some things that should never find their way into the disposal, including grease and fibrous food stuffs. Even if they make it through the disposal, they are likely to stick around in pipes and the inner workings of the disposal itself.

4. Plumbing is an easy task you can tackle yourself. While there are a few minor plumbing tasks that you could handle, the majority of plumbing jobs require the experience and tools of a professional, licensed plumber. Don’t skimp when it comes to the system you rely on for drinking water and waste disposal. When you need a San Diego plumbing job done right, give us a call.
